Toi Tu - Te Ara, is an exciting group exhibition promoting our tauira whakairo (carving students), their taonga and their creative journey with Te Wānanga o Aotearoa. Nau mai haere mai.
Te ara - the breaking of waters (in childbirth) as a metaphor provides you an insight to the Te Wānanga o Aotearoa tauira (students) have engaged over the last nine months. The taonga displayed have an ancient whakapapa in their origin. Though the hands that crafted these taonga are infant, in practice, their skill will mature with each strike of their mallet.
The last five weeks of the course has been dedicated to compiling taonga for this exhibition. The skill shown here can be directly attributed to the many hours tauira sacrificed away from their whanau.
